What is your full name?
What is the name of your business?
Laura Bowyer Employment Matters
What sort of services do you offer?
Legal Advice on Employment Matters.
When was your business formed?
Why did you decide to start your own business?
Quite simply, I wanted to make a difference. Working in the legal sector from 1993, I started as a Receptionist and worked my way up the ladder to become a “fee earner”. I always knew I could deliver more for my clients but working for a large firm does have its limitations. I wanted to make the decisions that made a difference to my clients, enabling them to have the confidence that with my help, what they were doing was right, but without the high cost.
Who are your typical clients?
Hospitality, Service Industries, Motor Industry, Retail, Manufacturing, Beauty and many more.
Where are you based and how can people get in touch with you?
My office is in Segensworth on the outskirts of Southampton, covering Hampshire and Home Counties, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex and wherever the need arises.
Did you face any challenges moving from your previous job to being self employed?
Absolutely. Looking back on those early days, I remember how daunting it all seemed. I always had confidence in my own ability and expertise in my professional capacity but it’s the smaller details like stationery, marketing and accounts.
What makes your business different and better, compared to typical Law Firms out there?
When I first set up the business, I asked my clients what it was they wanted. Refreshingly surprised at being asked the question all were supportive and
this gave me an enormous amount of encouragement and feedback. I don’t use a "one size fits all" business ethic. Each client is different and has specific needs, so I listen to what it is they want and how I can assist.
I am probably not your stereotypical legal advisor – being very personable and open I believe I have attributes that a lot of law firms cannot provide. Having access to resources, with minimal overheads keeps the cost more competitive and no concern of "how much is this going to cost". I am flexible, not just 9am-5pm Monday to Friday and work around the hours that suit my clients.
Some of my clients have become close friends. I want to build long term partnerships and relationships.
What difference has your business made to you as an individual?
A huge difference, I really enjoy what I do and being the decision maker without being answerable to others.
How do you manage to juggle work, motherhood, partner/fiancée/wife, etc?
I have a fantastic support network which enables me to have a work/life balance.
As a busy woman, when you are not busy, how do you relax eg family/hobbies etc?
Spending time with family is really important to me, particularly as my young children are growing and changing so quickly.
Do you have any encouraging words of advice you would love to share with other women out there?
Yes, when you just know that it’s right for you, then go for it, stay focused and keep your feet on the ground, with that in mind the skies the limit.
